That’s all folks! MultiVersus is officially dead but promises a 2024 comeback

Multiverse

The platform fighter MultiVersus has officially gone offline after an 11-month open beta period, with a full release expected sometime in 2024. Developer Player First Games announced the shutdown in March, removed the game from Steam’s store in April, and gradually reduced its content until its closure on June 25.

Players who downloaded the game before April 4 will still have access to its training and local multiplayer modes, with all characters and cosmetic items from the battle pass and store fully unlocked during the hiatus. However, upon the game’s return, it will revert to the characters and cosmetics unlocked prior to its hibernation. Player First Games plans to relaunch MultiVersus in early 2024 with various improvements, including new content, features, modes, netcode, matchmaking enhancements, and progression system updates.

No refunds will be provided to players who spent money on the game’s upgraded versions, premium currency, store items, or battle passes. All purchases, including unused currency, will remain available once the game returns with a full launch.

The handling of MultiVersus’ temporary shutdown has received criticism, particularly regarding the lack of clarity and communication from the developer. Despite being in open beta, the abruptness of the shutdown and the uncertainty about the game’s future caught many players off guard. While the game showed promise with $100,000 tournaments and solid gameplay, its popularity had been declining over time.

The abrupt hiatus and lack of clear communication may have dampened enthusiasm for MultiVersus’ eventual return in 2024. Concerns about whether the game will regain its momentum upon relaunch persist, especially considering the decline in player count leading up to its temporary closure.
