Sons of the Forest: How to Get Water

The Forest Guide

Sons of the Forest is the ultimate survival game set on an island packed with cannibalistic foes. You’re thrown into madness as part of a rescue crew searching for missing civilians when your chopper unexpectedly goes down. Your main aim? Simply surviving against the wild and the aggressive locals.

You’ve got to keep tabs on your basic needs like energy, hunger, and thirst. All three drain over time or with activity, and if they hit rock bottom, your health takes a hit. While you can find food in the form of wildlife and plants, securing a reliable water source isn’t always a walk in the park. Here’s the lowdown on how to score and stash water in Sons of the Forest

When that thirst meter hits rock bottom, a message reading “You Are Thirsty” pops up on the bottom left of your screen. When that happens, you’ve got to hunt down water. But be warned: not all water sources are safe for a swig. In fact, the lakes and rivers in Sons of the Forest are all contaminated. So, your best bets are rainwater collection or boiling dirty water to avoid getting sick every time you take a sip.

How to Use the Water Collector

Rain’s pretty frequent on the island, so snagging rainwater is a no-brainer. To do this, you’ll need to slap together a water collector, which requires sixteen sticks and a turtle shell. Sticks are scattered all over the forest, and Kelvin can lend a hand with gathering them.

Turtles hang out mainly on beaches, and you can nab their shells and meat by whacking them with a spear or any weapon you’ve got. A water collector can hold up to five drinks, but remember, it evaporates during dry spells, so make the most of it when rain’s on the menu.

Boiling water in Sons of the Forest means finding a river or lake and snagging a Cooking Pot. The forest’s vast and unpredictable, so expect the unexpected while you’re out and about.

Thankfully, you’re armed with an axe, GPS, and lighter from the get-go—all of which are super handy, especially that GPS. It dishes out a detailed map with paths, terrain changes, and water bodies marked, making finding water sources a breeze. Once you’ve located water, it’s time to snag a Cooking Pot.

You’ll find a Cooking Pot on the west side of the forest at an old campsite. Here’s how to boil water:

  1. Grab the Cooking Pot and fill it up at a water source.
  2. Set up a fire or fire pit and use your trusty lighter from the Emergency Pack to spark it up.
  3. Equip the Cooking Pot from your inventory and plonk it on the fire.
  4. Click on the gear icon and select “Clean Water” from the cooking menu.
  5. The lid pops on, and the water starts bubbling away.
  6. Once it’s clean, the pot slides off the fire.

Now, you can either guzzle it down straight away or store it in a Flask.

How to Store Water

Storing water means getting your hands on a Flask via 3D printing. Finding the printer’s a bit of a challenge since its location’s a well-kept secret. Head to the bunker on the west side of the island, close to the beach.

The entrance is at the bottom of a slope near a marker and what looks like a deserted golf cart covered in vines. Squeeze through the cave and follow the corridor until you spy a light. Head towards it to find a safe room loaded with goodies, including the 3D printer. Use it to craft a flask with printer resin, and you’re good to go. Refill it at any clean water source or Water Collector.
